My Music. My Story. Christian Siegfried.

October 19, 2020

My Music. My Story. Christian Siegfried.

Words by Rebekah Conn

Christian Siegfried is an Astro Physics and Mechanical Engineer major at Butler University. When not in the classroom, Christian is most likely browsing at record stores. His record collection features Prince, Funkadelic, James Brown, Sly The Family Stone, The Who, and much more.

What role does music play in your life?

Music is an outlet for me to just relax and enjoy the lyrics. When listening to music I like to appreciate the musicianship and connect with the emotions of the songs.  I enjoy listening to older music in different time periods. It gives me a glimpse of what people were experiencing in that time period.

What’s your favorite kind of music to listen to for pleasure?

I like to listen to Funk music the most. The groove of the music is upbeat and fun to listen to. The Payback by James Brown or Stand by Sly The Family Stone, and anything by George Clinton are some of my favorites.

What are your favorite memories linked to music?

When I was younger I enjoyed taking piano and trumpet lessons. Learning how to play an instrument taught me a lot about how to appreciate music. Another favorite memory is going to The Who concert with my dad.

Why do you collect records?

Collecting records is another way for me to enjoy music. The process of finding records is really enjoyable. I like being able to discover new musicians by looking at the liner notes and credits on the back of records. Browsing record stores is one of my favorite things to do. I’m excited when I find bands from Indiana and learn more about the music culture in Indianapolis.

How do you feel about classical music?

I like classical music. When trying to buy classical music records I get overwhelmed with it at times because there are so many different composers, conductors, and symphonies that make it hard to choose albums. I usually find composers I like and branch out from there.

If you were a musical instrument, what would you be and why?

I would be a trumpet because I play the trumpet and feel connected to the instrument. I’m good in a lot of different situations, just like the trumpet is good in different music.

So great to see young people interested in all kinds music. Records are such an interesting media for music and glad they can stay relevant today.
