Behind the Scenes: Radio at Classical Music Indy

July 27, 2017

Classical Music Indy has been broadcasting classical music on the radio for over 49 years. We reach over 4.5 million Hoosiers through the four stations that play our radio content.

Michael Toulouse is our Program Director and on-air host. He has been with Classical Music Indy since 2008.

Every day, Michael works with his Producer, Anna Pranger Sleppy, to create 14 hours of unique classical music radio programming.

To produce this large amount of radio content, they use a whole suite of programs and equipment.

Anna also maintains our extensive CD collection, which is housed in the F. Bruce Peck, Jr. Music Library. It houses 8,051 CDs, all neatly cataloged and stored in digital format in our computer system!

Here’s a little behind the scenes of Michael recording the “intros” and “outros” for our radio broadcasts.

I was pleased to see Anna Pranger doing this. She was an outstanding on-air commentator for WICR a few years ago, and I’ve missed her since. This is my vote for her return to air time!

This is a fascinating, behind-the-scenes glimpse. My wife and I have always loved Michael’s informal style and insightful intros. It’s a revelation to see how productive he and Anna are–14 hours of programming per day! What a switch from the old days, which involved sitting (yes, sitting) as one record played, preparing to introduce the next piece. That real-time process was restful but much less productive. Keep it up, Classical Music Indy!

Thank you for your praise! Yes, it is a lot more work than six hours in the early and late morning and three hours in the evening, but it means that we can bring even more classical music to you, our audience!

I love listening to this every day! One thing I enjoy –other than the music and the information provided for various composers/compositions—is hearing Michael Toulouse pronounce those foreign names with such finesse! I truly treasure this station. Thank you! I have a very eclectic taste in music; however, I must start my day with this.
